Listening

How often do you share your thoughts or feelings only to discover you weren't heard? I know how frustrating that is and it leaves you wondering why did you even bother.

Then, there are those times when you need to vent about a situation.  Share your frustration over something that's irritated you whether it's as complicated as family or as simple as the frustrations felt when driving.  At those times you want to be heard and feel understood without judgement but with compassion.  Maybe even hear words of encouragement and support through that situation.

What about those times when you simply need to talk it out? You know if you can verbalize your thoughts they will become more clear and you'll find your own direction. Instead when you share you're met with someone who wants to tell you what to do to fix everything. You don't feel broken, but you feel treated as if you're broken.

I know the frustrations of all these and I imagine that we've all been there.  That's why it's vital to have someone in your life who will listen, ask questions that will make you think, and seek not only to understand but to help you understand yourself better.  When you finally feel heard it brings with it a sense of acknowledgement and clarity.  Acknowledgement that you're important and clarity within your own mind.

Having been in that situation so often where I felt I wasn't heard and wondered why I even attempted to share my thoughts I learned to be that person who will always listen.  Listening is a special gift and one that I'm so blessed God has given me.
